The Sacagawea Pipeline Company is utilizing a Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) bore method of river crossing. The pipeline will lay a minimum of 100 feet beneath the bottom of Lake Sacagawea, and is considered the most environmentally safe method of crossing rivers, lakes or wetlands.

The HDD method is used for crossing waterways, roadways, shore approaches, congested areas, environmentally sensitive areas, and areas where other methods are costlier or not possible. HDD is used instead of other techniques to provide less disruption, minimal impact to the local community and above all, environmental safety.

    Thanks to the development and use of HDD, trenching and open cutting through environmentally delicate areas have been all but eliminated. There is no longer a need to stir toxins settled in lakes and river bottoms, killing fish, wildlife and poisoning the water down steam. Due to the benefits of HDD, wetlands and other environmentally sensitive areas remain virtually undisturbed.
